European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting online hate and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including the French president accused the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”

Widespread Condemnation Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the decision.

The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.

Other Developments Reported Today

In related judicial news:

  • A federal judge has halted efforts to cut security grants to local governments which resist certain immigration enforcement policies. The judge stated the case was “a further instance” of tying federal aid to adherence to directives.
  • Authorization was issued for the deployment of hundreds of national guard troops to a major US city ahead of the new year, coinciding with an active border security initiative.
  • A Pacific Island nation has agreed to take in a limited number of migrants from the US in return for increased assistance, after concluding a formal agreement with US authorities.

Furthermore, a congressional representative has initiated legal action seeking the removal of a political figure’s name from a prominent performing arts center in Washington DC.

Analysts have also noted that recent statements regarding Venezuelan oil align with a broader belief in some quarters of “economic expansionism”, leading to parallels with historical international strategies.
