It's the end of a long-standing era for ongoing anime, with Toei Animation announcing a new production schedule for One Piece, which has been airing for over a quarter-century and included dozens of non-canon storylines. Starting in the new year, once the current storyline concludes, the anime will go on a three-month hiatus until April, when the next major arc kicks off.
New Release Strategy
Going forward, the series will release a pair of cours every year for a maximum of two dozen installments. Toei states this will help the anime to “dive even deeper into the core of the universe — including more content, rhythm, and timing of the source material.” However, producers conclude by hinting at “thrilling developments” during the series' break, which suggests more related projects, such as the upcoming live-action adaptation, scheduled to debut in the interim.
Learning from Past Breaks
The series anime previously took a six-month pause that began in late 2024 and ended in April 2025. The intermission was for the animators to enhance the animation quality and allow the comic to get further ahead to avoid a rushed adaptation and repetitive summaries. The show couldn't benefit more from this break, and it has managed to deliver viewers with countless fight scenes, high-quality animation, and reduced non-canon content than ever before.
Adopting Modern Trends
Although some recap episodes appeared during this season, the benefits of this updated approach far surpass the odd pause in the action. This also gives the manga, which is currently in the thick of the latest arc, to gain more ground on the anime. According to the announcement, this may result in one episode of the series covering one chapter, with others instead covering more material or additional to compensate for time.
This concludes of a generation for Japanese animation, as the epic saga is the final major title to abandon the old-school way of production, which prioritized airing for almost the entire year. It's the reason why classics such as Bleach, and naturally itself have so many side stories, and the quality of the animation can vary widely between installments and the next. Nowadays, series creation is structured in seasons, with a couple maximum coming out each annually, enabling better quality and greater accuracy to the source material.
